Security Guard Unlocks Dream of Finishing College, From Struggling with Logbooks to Confident Accomplishment Reports

A dream that is seemingly too distant for a province boy is now a realty. That’s the story of how security guard unlocks dream of finishing college.

He recalled struggling with logbook reports in the past but can now compose his own accomplishment reports with confidence.

49-Year-Old Security Guard Graduates College

Security guards protect students and staff members within the school grounds. They monitor school entrances, patrol the grounds, respond to emergencies and assist during conflict resolution. Despite the importance of their role in schools, they are often overlooked.

A security guard in Caloocan City has not only proved that he is dedicated in his work, but he can achieve more through hard work if given the opportunity.

Julian Avila, 49 years old, is a guard at the University of Caloocan City (UCC) but this year, he is not only a school guard but one of the rosters of graduates from the institution.

According to a story by the Philippine Information Agency, Avila really wants to finish his studies and earn a degree. Nevertheless, he was province boy who went to the city for better opportunity, now he is a father of four and had to focus on their children’s education and provide his family’s basic needs.

Avila Enrolls BA Public Administration After a Scholarship Program Offer

His dream, however, found hope when UCC under Mayor Along Malapitan launched a scholarship program specifically for security and utility personnel. Hence, he grabbed the opportunity.

Avila would continue his daytime responsibility while taking evening classes. He enrolled in the course Bachelor of Public Administration – Evening Classes for Government Employees (BPA-ECGE).

He disclosed, the scholarship not only provided financial support but reignited his sense of purpose. “I wanted to finish my studies due to the hardships we faced in our province, so I took the chance in Manila.”

Distant Dream is Now an Achievement Unlocked

The dream that looked too distant in the past is now an achievement unlocked to the guard.

Now, he is determined to obtain his Civil Service Professional license to advance his career.

“My message to fellow fathers who haven’t finished their degrees is to seize any chance to study; it adds to your knowledge,” he said.

Following his achievement, he extends thanks to the UCC and the municipal mayor for the invaluable support.

He recalls struggling with logbook reports and have to ask for colleagues’ assistance in the past. It is a different story now, he can compose his own accomplishment reports with confidence.
